In my work I am constantly exploring the relationship between sculptural form and the forces of nature. My medium of choice is stone, which is a material that is rooted in earth, epitomizing both time and consistency. There is a particular elegance and simplicity that continues to draw me to this material. Stone represents stability, while its durability invites people to touch it, interact and reflect upon the deep connection it has to our world. My most recent work incorporates recognizable elements that alters and transcends the stones natural appearance. This approach and understanding of the material has become the foundation for my creative development.
A large component of my creative process involves maintaining a personal connection to the medium as the majority of the stone is sourced locally in British Columbia. Working with the material from its place of origin and having a personal connection to it, continues to inspire my exploration of its potential.
My approach to sculpture has evolved from earlier works with refined, often highly- polished surfaces to more recent work where I have placed a greater importance on the natural shape and texture of the stone.
Throughout my career, I have enjoyed incorporating a sense of humour into a number of my sculptures, as a way to both intrigue and delight my audience. The use of satire allows an idea to be more accessible; both inviting the viewer to question and interpret the completed work.
